The project focuses on the process of the creation of wall paintings, in particular on the reconstruction of the working procedures during their realization in the Czech lands during the 17th and 18th centuries. The research focuses on the relationships between artists and commissioners, the conception of iconographic programmes of murals, the relationships between paintings and architecture, the perspective projection of murals, painting materials and techniques, and other aspects related to the realisation of Baroque monumental paintings. Contemporary practices will be examined and interpreted through research of contemporary literature (theoretical treatises and technical manuals) and archival sources (contracts, accounts, concepts). Painting techniques will also be examined by restorers and technologists on selected paintings. The results of the research should not only provide a solid basis for the art historical interpretation of the murals, but also contribute to their adequate conservation, preservation and restoration. The main output will be a book monograph, which will become the basis for further research on wall paintings in the Czech Republic and in the Central European context.
The aim of the project is to understand and interpret the working procedures and techniques of wall paintings in the Czech lands in the 17th and 18th centuries on the basis of research into historical texts and restoration-technological research.
