Project link: Sculptures and Cities | Czech Art of the 1950s-1980s in Public Space: evidence, research and restoration
The aim of the project is to create tools for identification, documentation, registration and popularization of a group of works of immovable cultural heritage - artistic realizations created in public space between 1950-1989. For objects made of selected materials, the aim is also to establish conservation procedures and methodologies for the long-term preventive protection, conservation and restoration of these works of art.
The project focuses on exterior works - sculptures, reliefs related to architecture and works of various wall techniques (mosaic, sgraffito). These are among the most endangered groups of immovable cultural heritage. The vast majority of them are not declared immovable cultural monuments. A complication in the declaration process is often the lack of information on the ownership of the objects, authorship, dating, artistic qualities or authenticity of the preservation of the works. Therefore, the main objective is to create an expert map with information verified in contemporary written sources (minutes of the CFAA commission for the collaboration between the artist and the architect). This will make available in a clear way the most complete data on the creation of the works and, thanks to field research, also on their current state. The final goal of the topographical part of the project will be to identify and recommend for further protection mainly works of higher quality (often by renowned artists and of high material value). They will also be presented to the general public in the media space.
A number of previously unused materials and techniques were used for the exterior construction. Therefore, an important part of the project is the material research and development of working procedures for preventive maintenance and protection of objects made of various "modern" materials (concrete, cement sgraffito, laminate). Effective methods of non-destructive and minimally destructive in situ object survey will be developed. Conservation and restoration interventions will be applied on model examples leading to the development of conservation procedures and methodologies for selected types of materials.
