Annotation:
Sgraffito as a plastering technique is primarily decorative; it usually forms the last layer of the building's shell, which also means that sgraffito plaster is exposed to the weather. Since the completion of the original decoration, a number of repair, conservation or restoration interventions have taken place on various facades. Some facades have completely lost their sgraffito character and have acquired the character of paintings or even reliefs (lime slurries), their original material often marginal or non-existent, as modern interdisciplinary research has gradually confirmed. This finding applies not only to Renaissance sgraffito, but also to nineteenth- and twentieth-century sgraffito. Twentieth-century sgraffito often do not have the status of a listed building and are therefore particularly at risk of damage or even complete destruction during routine restoration work. However, the approach to Renaissance sgraffito in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries (i.e. before the advent of 'modern conservation') was very specific. This raises the question of what is left of authentic sgraffito in such cases and how to perceive authenticity in sgraffito works?
