The well was discovered as part of an archaeological survey near the village of Ostrov in the Chrudim region. The survey was carried out by the Archaeological Centre Olomouc before the construction of the R35 expressway.

The well was made of oak wood from four corner posts and planks that were inserted into carved grooves in the posts. The results of dendrochronological dating carried out by a specialist from the Institute of Wood Science at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology of Mendel University in Brno show that the trees used for the well's filling (planks) were felled between 5256-5255 BC. The corner posts are made from previously felled trunks, specifically from a trunk that was felled in the autumn or winter of 5259 BC or in the winter of early 5258 BC.

The conservation of the individual parts of the well was carried out at the Faculty of Restoration of the University of Pardubice between 2019 and 2022. The procedure chosen for the conservation of the damaged, water-saturated wood was to use a sucrose solution.
