At the end of April 2024, experts from the Faculty of Restoration, from the Institute of Restoration of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and Palacký University in Olomouc visited Engadin, Switzerland. The aim of the trip was to study the sgraffiti in this area.
The oldest sgraffito dates back to the 16th century and the technique of decoration has been preserved until today. In addition to the material sources, it is also possible to study the processes and techniques in Engadin, which to some extent have been preserved by traditional craft repetition to this day. The team therefore also met contemporary sgraffiti and lime artists.
The packed program of the study trip was planned in detail thanks to the helpfulness and kindness of Prof. Dr. Giacinty Jean (Head of Bachelor and Master in Conservation-Restoration, Institute of Materials and Construction, University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland-SUPSI, Mendrisio, Switzerland), who accompanied the team throughout and, in addition to her organizational and professional skills, also helped with communication in the local Rhaeto-Romance language.
We look forward to the cooperation between the institutions that was deepened by this personal meeting.
