System and methodology for scanning historical objects by unmanned helicopters and transferring scanned large volumes of data for their professional processing

Provider: CESNET z.s.p.
Programme: Fond rozvoje CESNETu
Implementation period: 01.07.17 - 31.12.18
Workplace: Fakulta restaurování - Katedra humanitních věd FR

Description:
The aim of this multidisciplinary project is built on the success, and media monitored project http://mrs.felk.cvut.cz/projects/mbzirc, funded by CESNET. While the original project was focused on technical implementation of data acquisition and 3D object modeling devices, in this project, we plan to focus on the process of documentation of historic buildings together with historians and restorers and on sharing and processing of obtained big data. Our aim is to develop a methodology that would standardize the process of documentation of historical objects. During the initial experiments with an assistance of conservationists in the historic church buildings, we have also identified their requirements that will necessitate a development of assistive technologies for the helicopter operator. In the project, a system will be developed to enable flying very close to objects, to fly to indoor places, the line of sight between the pilot and the helicopter is interrupted, and to provide additive lighting using a group of cooperating helicopters. Beside the development of the methodology, the project output will be historically annotated photo and video documentation of selected historic buildings and their 3D models with restoration context.
