eng Emmaus Painting Cycle – techniques and materials based on visual survey The lecture summarizes the findings of painting technique obtained by visual investigation. The visual survey includes a detailed on-site inspection of the paintings, their photographic documentation and graphic drawings mapping the individual phenomena. It also works with specialized imaging methods such as photogrammetry, IR thermography and so-called technical photography including techniques such as ultraviolet luminescence, infrared photography, ultraviolet photography and false-colour ultraviolet or infrared photography. The presentation attempts to provide a basic understanding of all parts of the painting including the substrate, which is the masonry, the plaster layers, the underlying and preparatory layers of the painting and the paint layers themselves. Other decorative techniques such as relief decoration and gilding are also described. The current appearance of the paintings is influenced by the state preservation, which is sometimes unfortunately very poor. The distinction of later interventions to the cycle and possible pigments alterations is essential to an understanding of the painting technique.
