Description:
In 2023, a damaged altarpiece canvas painting from the side altar of St. Joseph, depicting the theme of The Death of St. Joseph, was discovered in the choir loft of the cemetery church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross. Today, the legibility of the painting is reduced and is attributed in published literature to Viennese painter F. X. Wagenschön, dated 1769. The project's goal is to conduct an advanced non-destructive examination of the painting (optical-physical methods and extensive imaging techniques in technical photography), supplemented by archival research into the creation and historical context of the piece. An essential part of the project will be the examination of the fragments of the St. Joseph altar in situ, as well as the investigation of wooden fragments stored in a repository. The results will aid in the restoration of the altarpiece canvas and considerations regarding the broader rehabilitation of the altar itself. The findings will be presented to the professional community at a conference and published in scholarly journals
